Quebec-Labrador Compilation Project, 2015-2016

Project Description

Published lake sediment data are available for both the Labrador Trough and the Core Zone, extending from central Labrador into NE Quebec.  Comparison of samples collected by Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles in NE Quebec and the Geological Survey of Canada in Labrador is difficult due to the use of different digestions and analytical methods.  Samples from Labrador were reanalysed to the same specifications as the Quebec samples to facilitate compilation into one dataset to create geochemical maps for the area.

The following GSC data sets were reanalysed and used in the compilation:

Area No. of Samples Year of Collection Original GSC OFs Reanalysis Year Reanalysis Data*
northern Labrador 2075 1982, 1983 and 1985 904, 998, 1209, 1210 2015 GSC OF 8017
north-central and western Labrador 3441 1978, 1982 557, 559, 560, 904 2016 GSC OF 8026

* reanalysis data are published along with data from the original open files

Data from the following projects of the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles were also used in the compilation :

Project Funding

Funding was provided by the Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals program phase 2, the Ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MERN) and the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador.

GEM (2008-2013) was renewed in 2013 (until 2020) and Phase 2 continues to advance geological knowledge in the North to support increased exploration of natural resources and to inform decisions on land use that balance conservation and responsible resource development.

The MERN’s role is to manage Québec’s land and resources.

The NL Geological Survey carries out impartial, state-of-the-art geoscientific investigations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in order to interpret and explain the Province's geological evolution, and to describe, interpret and explain the distribution, nature, quantity and origin of the Province's mineral resources.
