NATMAP Slave Province Program, Quaternary geology component, 1994-1996

Project Description

The Quaternary geology component of the Slave Province National Mapping Program was designed to provide a regional framework for geologic interpretation of surficial sediments, environmental management and drift prospecting.  The project involved mapping the surficial geology, till sampling and measuring ice flow indicators.  The geochemical data will help establish regional background concentrations of selected trace and minor elements for mineral exploration and environmental base line studies.  The data are published in the following Open Files:

GSC Open File NTS Map Sheet
3316, 3355 86I Napaktulik Lake
3317, 3341 86H Point Lake
3386, 3387, 3768, 3654 76E Contwoyto Lake
3412 86O Coppermine
3360 86P Kikerk Lake

As part of the project, detailed till sampling was undertaken around the Ranch Lake kimberlite in the southern Contwoyto Lake map area.  The results of this part of the project will aid in the design of mineral exploration programs for kimberlite-hosted diamond deposits in glaciated terrain.  The data are published in GSC Open File 3924.
