Survey Description

In July 2018, stream sediment and water sampling was carried out in the Fort Providence area, Northwest Territories.  Sites were selected to augment existing samples, resample a few of the sites visited in 2017 and target a number of coincident till and stream sediment sites in proximity to those with elevated grain counts.

Sampling planned in the Kakisa and Hay River areas in 2018 was not feasible due to high water levels.

In 2019, stream sediment and water samples were collected southwest of Great Slave Lake in the Fort Providence-Kakisa area.

The following samples were collected:

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 85E/02 (Axe Creek) and 85E/03 (Wallace Creek) in the Fort Providence area, Northwest Territories.  It is bounded to the south by the Mackenzie Highway and to the north by the Mackenzie River.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 80 km west-southwest of the hamlet of Fort Providence.

  • Covers parts of NTS 85C/14 (Lady Evelyn Falls) and 85F/03 (Point Sarristo) near the settlement of Kakisa, Northwest Territories.  It is located between Kakisa and Beaver lakes and crosses the Mackenzie Highway.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 43 km south-southwest of the hamlet of Fort Providence.

  • Covers part of NTS 85G/12 (Found Island; 2 samples) in the Fort Providence area, Northwest Territories.  It is bounded to the east by Great Slave Lake.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 115 km southwest of Yellowknife and 107 km northeast of the hamlet of Fort Providence.

  • Covers part of NTS 85B (Buffalo Lake) and 85C (Tathlina Lake), southeast of the hamlet of Fort Providence, Northwest Territories.  It is bounded to the north by Great Slave Lake.  The centre of the study area is located between lakes Tathlina and Buffalo as well as along the Mackenzie Highway.

  • Covers small parts of NTS 85B/14 (untitled; 1 sample) and 85C/01(untitled; 1 sample) southwest of Buffalo Lake, Northwest Territories. It is bounded to the south by 60°N latitude.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 25 km southwest of Buffalo Lake and 43 km southeast of Mackenzie Highway.
