Survey Description

A lake bottom sediment and till sampling survey was carried out in the Kirkland-Lake-Timmins-Matachewan areas, northern Ontario and the Noranda-Val d’Or-Belleterre areas, northwestern Quebec from December 1971 to early April, 1972.  Lake sediments and basal till samples were also collected on a more detailed scale around 4 lakes: Nighthawk Lake, Ontario and Lac Abitibi, Lac Pelletier and Lac Macamic in Quebec.  The study is published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 112 as follows:

Digital analytical data and sample locations for the regional samples are available in GAS File 24.

Digital analytical data for the detailed samples are available in GAS File 25, but the file does not contain the sample locations. In order to obtain the locations for the detailed samples, it is necessary to look at the sample location maps that were published in GSC Open File 112.

Sampling Procedure

Lake sediment samples were collected from lake bottoms through holes chipped, cut or augered through ice.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 32D/11 (Palmarolle), northwestern Quebec.  It covers the eastern part of Lac Abitibi and is located approximately 4 km west of the town of Palmarolle.  It is bounded to the west by the Ontario-Quebec border.  It outlines the area covered by detailed lake sediment and till sampling.

  • Covers parts of NTS 31M (Ville-Marie), 31N (Grand-Lac-Victoria), 32C (Senneterre), 32D (Rouyn-Noranda), 41P (Gogama) and 42A (Timmins) in the Abitibi region of northern Ontario and western Quebec.  It is bounded to the west by 82°W longitude to the east by 76.75°W.  It outlines the area covered by regional lake sediment sampling and also encompasses two areas of detailed lake sediment and till sampling around Nighthawk Lake and Lac Pelletier.

  • Covers parts of NTS 32D/14 (La Sarre) and 32D/15 (Rivière Macamic) in northwestern Quebec.  It covers all of Lac Macamic and is located just north of Highway 111 and south of the boundary between Canton de Chazel and Canton de Royal-Roussillon.  It outlines the area covered by detailed lake sediment and till sampling.
