Survey Description

In July 1975, a detailed geochemical orientation survey was carried out on the Foxe Peninsula, southern Baffin Island.  Sediment and water samples were collected from all streams, lakes and ponds located within a one-mile radius of uranium showings.  Soils were sampled at 50 or 100 foot intervals across mineralized zones.  Several rock samples from mineralized outcrops were also collected.

In August 1975, a helicopter-supported reconnaissance lake water and sediment orientation survey was also carried on the Foxe Peninsula.  Sample density was one sample per five square miles for most of the area, but was increased to one sample in 1.4 square miles in 100 square mile areas around each of the two main uranium showings.

An orientation survey to assess the feasibility of stream water and sediment sampling as a compliment to the lake geochemistry was carried out in a 250 square mile area on the Meta Incognita Peninsula, 40 miles west of the town of Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit).

The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 444.

Quantities Analysed:

All water samples for U by fluorometry and for Cu, Pb and Zn by AAS after an APDC-MIBK solvent extraction.

All sediments and soils by NA-delayed neutron counting for U.  All lake sediments by AAS after an HNO3-HCl acid digestion for Mo, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Mn and Fe.

The majority of soils and stream sediments and some lake sediments by ES using a direct reading instrument for 22 major and minor elements.

Selected rock samples for U and Th; by DC arc spectrographic methods for 42 minor and major elements.

Geochem Maps Available:

None.

Other Analyses:

Lake and stream water were tested in the field for pH and conductivity.  High U samples also tested for alkalinity.

Lake sediments analysed for LOI.
