Survey Description


In the fall of 1974, soil samples were collected within the Northern Great Plains Coal Province as part of the Great Plains Project.  A total of 136 sites were sampled, 48 in glaciated terrain, and 88 sites in unglaciated terrain.  Two soil samples were collected at each of the 136 sites and include a channel composite of the A-horizon (0-10 cm) and a channel composite from the C-horizon (110-120 cm depth).

A subset of the samples (n=12) were given to the Geological Survey of Canada for reanalysis, and these data are published in GSC Open File 5582.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of Wyoming, Montana, North and South Dakota in the Great Plains area of north central United States and parts of NTS 62E (Wood Mountain), 62F (Willow Bunch Lake), 72G (Weyburn) and 72H (Virden) in southern Saskatchewan.  It is bounded to the north by latitude 50°N.  The confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers is located in the north-central part of the study area.
