Survey Description

In 1977, a series of field investigations were carried out to dermine the usefulness of helium and radon in lakes and groundwaters for uranium exploration.  The main objectives were:

  • To observe the difference in He signal in waters over the ore deposit relative to barren country
  • To test a semiportable He analyzer under field conditions
  • To compare Rn, U and He levels obtained in summer versus those in winter under the ice

Five types of tests were carried out:

Sample Type Date of Sampling Number of Samples
Regional lake waters and sediments June 10-20, 1977 400 lake sites (samples: 2 lake sediment, one lake surface water, one lake bottom water)
Semi-detailed lake water follow-up June 20-23, 1977 57 lake water sites (14 samples Zimmer Lake area ; 33 samples Seahorse Lake area)
Detailed lake water follow up June 22-25, 1977 96 sites (2 bottles at each site)
Seasonal comparison of lake waters

March 1977

June 28-30, 1977

86 lake water samples from 36 sites

4 well water samples from 2 sites

1 stream water sample

Drill hole water (in U exploration drill holes or near U mineralization)

June 27, 1977

July 4, 1977

27 water samples from 10 holes

35 samples from 7 holes

A summary of the work can be found in Geological Survey of Canada Current Research, Paper 78-1B.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of the southwest corner of NTS 74H (Geikie River) in the area of the Key Lake uranium deposit, northern Saskatchewan.  The western edge of the study area is located approximately 3 km east of longitude 106°W.  Zimmer Lake, Waddington Lake and Wilson Lake and Key Lake are found within the study area.
