Survey Description

In the summer of 1964, the GSC’s first helicopter-supported reconnaissance geochemical survey was carried out in the Keno Hill area, Yukon.  The area surveyed is located about 200 miles north of Whitehouse and covered 1900 square miles.  Steam sediments were collected from the active channel at intervals of 1500 feet along all creeks.  Two water samples were taken from each creek and large (1 L) samples of water were taken from springs throughout the area.  From the gravels of each creek, crews panned one or two heavy mineral samples.  The total number of samples collected is detailed below:

Sample Type Number of Samples
stream sediments 5900
stream water tested in the field 5700
stream water collected 700
spring water 150
spring sediment 150
heavy mineral samples 550

Details of this survey and results have been published in many GSC publications, including GSC Paper 66-54.  Maps of heavy metal content of stream and spring sediments and waters as well as individual metal maps for the stream sediment samples have also been published.

In 1977, some of the Keno Hill samples were reanalysed for uranium and other elements at the same time as NGR samples (GSC Open File 518) that were collected in the surrounding area.  The Keno Hill samples were treated the same way as the NGR samples when they were analysed (see OF 612 for U).
