Survey Description

In 1987, a heavy mineral and stream sediment sampling survey was conducted in the Gatineau area, Quebec.  The area covers 17,700 km2.  A total of 1661sites were visited and samples were collected at an average density of 1 sample per 10 km2.  At each site, two samples were collected.  The first sample (~8 kg) was collected using a shovel and screened to obtain the heavy fraction.  The second sample (~0.5 kg) was collected in the bed stream or near the shore, screened to obtain the <177 micron fraction.

The heavy mineral samples were analyzed for:

Element Dissolution Technique
Ag, Al, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Eu, Fe, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, Pb, Sm, Sr, Th, Ti, V, Y, Zn

HNO3

inductively coupled plasma emission (ICP-ES)
Hg unknown atomic absorption (AAS)
As, Au, Br, Cs, Sb, Se, Tm, U, W n/a neutron activation (INAA)

The fine fraction of the stream sediment samples were analyzed for:

Element
Al, As, Au, Ba, Be, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Eu, Fe, Hg, K, La, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Th, Ti, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Zn

The data are published in Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources MB 88-35 (geochemistry of heavy minerals) and MB89-08 (geochemistry of the fine fraction of stream sediments).

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 31F (Pembroke), 31G (Ottawa), 31J (Mont-Laurier), 31K (Deep River), 31N (Grand-Lac-Victoria) and 31O (Lac Kempt) in the Gatineau region, Quebec.  No samples were collected in Gatineau Park, the Township of Maniwaki or the Kazabazua sector. The study area is bounded to the north by 47.25°N latitude and to the east by 75.5°W longitude.

  • Covers parts of NTS 31F (Pembroke), 31G (Ottawa) and 31J (Mont-Laurier), the area of Gatineau Park, Quebec.  It represents an area that was not sampled during the 1987 stream sediment survey of the Gatineau area.
