Survey Description


In the summer of 2000, a high-density lake sediment and water quality survey was carried out in the Ignace area, northwestern Ontario as part of Operation Treasure Hunt.

A total of 2214 lake sites were visited and 2005 lake sediment samples were collected.

The data are published in Ontario Geological Survey Open File Report OFR6106 and Miscellaneous Release-Data, MRD118.

The data are also part of a compilation database, Lake Geochemistry of Ontario – 2019.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers NTS 52G/4 (White Otter Lake), 52G/5 (Ignace), 52G/6 (Bonheur), 52G/11 (Mattabi) and 52G/12 (Mameigwess Lake) in the Ignace region, northwestern Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 130 km northeast of the Ontario-Minnesota border.  The junction of the Trans Canada Highway and Highway 599 is located approximately in the centre of the study area.

  • Covers most of NTS 52G/1 (Upsala) and part of 52G/8 (Pakashkan Lake) in the Ignace region, northwestern Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 115 km northwest of the city of Thunder Bay.  The Trans Canada Highway crosses the southwest corner of the study area.
