Survey Description


Between June and August 2001, lake sediment sampling and a water quality survey were carried out in the Lac des Iles-Black Sturgeon River area, northwestern Ontario, as part of Operation Treasure Hunt.

A total of 2456 lake sites were visited and 2259 lake sediment samples were collected.

The data are published in Ontario Geological Survey Open File Report OFR6096 and Miscellaneous Release-Data, MRD108.

The data are also part of a compilation database, Lake Geochemistry of Ontario – 2019.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers most of NTS 52H (Nipigon), all of 52B/16 (Savanne), 52A/13 (Raith) and parts of 52A/14 (East Bay) and 52A/15 (Greenwich Lake) in the Lac des Iles–Black Sturgeon River area, northwestern Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 85 km north of Thunder Bay and 58 km southwest of Lake Nipigon.  The Trans Canada Highway runs through the southwest part of the study area.
