Survey Description

In 1998, high density lake surveys were conducted in four areas in central Labrador: Wilson Lake, Seal Lake, Harp Lake and near the Pants Lake intrusion.

A total of 957 lake sediment and water samples were collected from 940 sites.  Duplicate samples were collected about 50-100 m apart at 18 of these sites. The cente of the lake was sampled where possible but on deeper lakes (>25 m,) a sample from a shallower site closer to shore was collected.

The data are published in Newfound and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open File LAB/1311 and are also part of a geochemical lake survey compilation, Open File LAB/1465.

A subset of these samples was analysed for platinum and palladium and the data are published in NL DME Open File LAB/1362.

Sampling Procedure

A weighted tubular sampler fitted with a nylon rope for retrieval was dropped from a float equipped helicopter.  Samples were stored in water resistant Kraft paper bags.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of 13E/06 (Metchin River), 13E/07 (Wilson Lake), 13E/09 (no title) and 13E/10 (no title) in the Wilson Lake region, central Labrador.  Highway 500 crosses the southern part of the study area.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 88 km southeast of Michikamau Lake and 154 km west of Lake Melville.

  • Covers parts of NTS 13K/05 (Wuchusk Lake) and 13L/08 (no title) in the Seal Lake area, central Labrador.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 110 km northeast of Michikamau Lake and 150 km northwest of Lake Melville.

  • Covers parts of NTS 13K/13 (no title), 13K/14 (Mistinippi Lake), 13L/16 (no title), 13M/01 (no title) and 13N/04 (Harp Lake) in the Harp Lake area, central Labrador.  Shapio Lake and Harp Lake are located in the eastern and northern parts of the study area respectively.

  • Covers parts of NTS 13M/08, /09 (both untitled), 13N/05, 12 (both untitled) in the vicinity of the Pants Lake intrusion, central Labrador.  Sarah Lake is located in the central part of the study area.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 106 km west of the town of Hopedale.
