Survey Description

In the summer of 2017, a till sampling transect was carried out in the Lynn Lake area, northwest Manitoba.  A total of 48 till samples were collected from hand-dug pits, every 2.5 – 4 km where possible.  C horizon material was targeted as sample medium, but at some sites B horizon was collected (n=7) and at 10 sites, a mix of B- and C-horizon material was collected.

At each site, 2 samples were collected: a 3 kg sample for geochemistry and textural analysis and a 22.7 L sample for kimberlite indicator mineral processing.

The data are published in Manitoba Growth, Enterprise and Trade Open File OF2018-3.  This open file also publishes reanalyses of samples previously collected (OF 86-2) near Nickel Lake.

Some of these data are part of Manitoba Geological Survey compilation open file OF2020-3.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 64C (Granville Lake), small parts of 64F/3 (Goldsand Lake) and 64F/4 (Carswell Lake) and a very small part of 64B/12 (Opachuanau Lake; 4 samples) in the Lynn Lake area, northwest Manitoba.  It is located between the town of Leaf Rapids and the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border and runs along Provincial roads 391 and 394 in the eastern and western parts of the study area respectively.  It also extends south along Provincial Road 396 towards Fox Lake mine.
