Survey Description

During the summer of 1993, 124 sites were sampled for till in the Sevogle area, northern New Brunswick.  Till samples weighing about 2.5 kg each were taken approximately 55 cm below the surface along the top of the C-horizon or at the BC transition.  Compact basal till was sampled, but in some areas, only loose ablation till was available.  Pebbles (100 at each site) were also collected.

The data are published in New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy Open File 99-3 and on Map Plates 99-6, 99-7, 99-8 and 99-9 which accompany the report.

The data are also part of a compilation published in New Brunswick Department of Energy and Resource Development Open File OF 2017-2.

Data Description:

Paper report with data lists.  Data diskette available.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.063 mm fraction analyzed by INAA and XRF for 38 trace elements.

Geochem Maps Available:

Proportional dot maps showing dispersal of elements in till.

Other Analyses:

Pebble counts.

Sampling Procedure

A 4 km 2 grid was established for the study area, and sample sites, located at the center of each square comprising the established grid, were identified.  However, prior to the commencement of fieldwork, air photos were examined and many sample sites had to be relocated, if material was not till. A total of 124 sites were sampled.  Compact basal till was sampled, but in some areas, only loose ablation till was available for sampling.  No other sediment type was sampled for geochemical analyses.  As much as possible, washed till was not sampled in the glaciolacustrine or estuarine basin.

Samples were generally taken approximately 55 cm below the surface along the top of the C-horizon or at the BC transition.  Till samples, weighing about 2.5 kg, and one hundred pebbles, were collected at each site for clast dispersal/pebble count studies.
