Survey Description
During 1982 and 1983, a regional stream sediment survey was conducted throughout northern mainland Nova Scotia and eastern Cape Breton Island, an area covering about 10,000 km2. Approximately 4100 samples were collected at ~2 km intervals and wet-sieved onsite to pass through a 1 mm nylon screen, placed in Kraft paper bags and air dried. Samples were then dry sieved to collect the -80 mesh material for analysis (AAS and ICP-AES).
Orientation surveys were conducted concurrently at the Meat Cove deposit and the Coxheath deposit. Samples were collected at linear intervals of 350 m with the same collection and analytical procedures as the regional samples.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

Covers parts of NTS 11D (Halifax), 11E (Truro), 21A (Annapolis Royal) and 21H (Amherst), northern mainland Nova Scotia. It is bounded to the north by Northumberland Strait and to the west by Chignecto Bay. Minas Basin lies in the central part of the study area.

Covers parts of NTS 11F/5 (Guysborough), /6 (Chedabucto Bay), /11 (Port Hawkesbury) and /12 (Antigonish) in northern mainland Nova Scotia. It is bounded to the west by longitude 61.75°W, to the east by the Strait of Canso and to the south by Chedabucto Bay. The town of Guysborough lies in the south central part of the study area.

Covers part of NTS 11K (Sydney) and small parts of 11N/1 (Cape North) and 11N/2 (Cape St. Lawrence), northern Cape Breton Island. It is bounded to the north by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

Covers parts of NTS 11F (Canso), 11G (Glace Bay), 11J (also Glace Bay) and 11K (Sydney), eastern Cape Breton Island. It is bounded to the east and south by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by Bras d’Or Lake.
