Survey Description

Between 1973 and 1978, geochemical stream sediment surveys were carried out in the Cape Breton Highlands region of Nova Scotia.  Samples were collected at a density of ~1.2 sample per km2 over the 11,970 km2 survey area.  Each sample consisted of one to two pounds of stream sediment collected by hand.  All accessible streams were sampled at 330 m intervals.

Year Highland Area Number of Samples
1973 Chéticamp 3048
1974 Lake Ainslie 3000
1975 Baddeck 1690
1975 Wreck Cove 1150
1977 Port Hood 3500
1978 Port Hawkesbury 2800
Total:   14,450

The samples were oven-dried, sieved to -60 mesh and digested using hot acid partial extraction techniques before analysis by AAS.

A summary of the work and related publications can be found in Nova Scotial Department of Mines and Energy Open File Report 90-017.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.
