Survey Description

Between 1971 and 1973, geochemical stream sediment surveys were carried out in the Cobequid Highlands region of northern mainland Nova Scotia.  Silt samples were collected at a density of ~2.8 samples per km2 over the 2100 km2 survey area.  Each sample consisted of one to two pounds of stream sediment collected by hand.  All accessible streams flowing from the north and south flanks of the Cobequid Highlands were sampled at 330 m intervals.

Year Number of Samples
1971 1379
1972 1274
1973 3218
Total: 5871

The samples were oven-dried, sieved to -60 mesh and digested using hot acid partial extraction techniques before analysis by AAS.

A summary of the work and related publications can be found in Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy Open File Report 90-017.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 11E (Truro) and 21H (Amherst), in the Cobequid Highlands area of northern mainland Nova Scotia. It is bounded to the west by Bay of Fundy and by Minas Basin to the south.  The towns of New Yarmouth, Parrsboro and East Mountain are located within the study area.
