GSC: uranium by fluorometry

General Methodology:

U by fluorometry

400 mg of minus 250 mesh sediment are weighed out.  To this are added 6 ml of 4N HNO3 and 2 drops of concentrated HCl.  The sample is shaken and placed in a water bath at 90°C for 1.5 hours.  The sample is then diluted to 20 ml with metal-free water, with intermittent agitation and allowed to settle.  A 0.2 mlaliquot of the leach is placed on a Pt dish and evaporated to dryness.  The residue is burned for 1 minute above a Bunsen flame.  To this are added 3g of a K2CO3-Na2CO3-NaF flux.  The sample is then fused for 10 minutes at 650°C, cooled in a dessicator, and the U concentration read on a Jarrel-Ash fluorometer.
