GSC cold vapour atomic absorption spectroscopy: Hg

General Methodology:

Hg in sediment

500 mg of less than 250 mesh material was leached with 20 ml conc. HNO3, 1 ml conc. HCl, and 80 ml H2O, at 95°C for 1.5 hours in a water bath.  The sample was cooled and a 100 ml aliquot was taken.  The solution was analysed using a Techtron AA-5 atomic absorption spectrophotometer, by a cold vapour method.  100 ml of 2.5% SnSO4 were added to the 100 ml aliquot.  The sample was aerated and the metallic Hg vapour released was determined at 253.7 nm.
