Strange Lake Indicator Mineral Project
Project Description
The undeveloped Strange Lake REE deposit in Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador was sampled to test and demonstrate modern indicator mineral methods for detecting REE deposits using glacial sediments. The site was chosen because:
- the bedrock and surficial geology are well known; and
- there is a well documented radioactive boulder and REE-rich till dispersal train down-ice of the deposit.
A summary of the work is found below:
Sampling Year | Sample Type | GSC Publication |
1981 + 1983 | till; unprocessed and archived | n/a |
2008 | bedrock | OF 8240 |
2015 | till, bedrock, float | |
2015 | 5 composite till samples, each created from 5-9 archived samples collected in close proximity to each other in 1981 and 1983. |

The Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals Program was first launched by the Government of Canada in 2008 as a 5 year program administered by Natural Resources Canada to provide geoscience knowledge in order to identify the potential for energy and mineral resources in Canada's North. The program was renewed in 2013, and Phase 2 of GEM (GEM 2, 2013-2020) continues to advance geological knowledge in the North to support increased exploration of natural resources and to inform decisions on land use that balance conservation and responsible resource development.
