Survey Description

In June 1982, lake bottom sediments and water samples were collected about 80 km northwest of the Lone Gull uranium deposit (currently Kiggavik) from a lake informally named Dop Lake (the outline looks like a Duck On a Pedestal) in Nunavut.  Approximately 209 samples were collected through the ice from a 100 m x 100 m grid and approximately 691 samples from a more detailed 50 m x 50 m grid.

Lake sediments were collected with a Hornbrook sampler and store in mason jars for helium analyses.  Lake water samples were collected through the ice with a Kemmerer bottle 0.5 m from the bottom of the lake and stored in glass bottles for dissolved gas analyses.

Lake waters were analysed in the field laboratory for He, Rn, O 2, pH and conductivity.  Helium in lake sediments and waters was determined in the field laboratory with a calibrated helium leak detector.

The data were presented on a poster but not published.

DOP Lake rough draft of poster presentation ( FileID=1765 download )
This set of 21 sheets appears to represent a very rough draft of a poster presentation describing the DOP Lake survey (Duck On a Pedestal; informal name).  There is no evidence of the poster actually being presented anywhere.  Sheet #14, labelled “10 Sunset photo; no text” is definitely not a photo of DOP Lake.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of the south-central portion of NTS 66G/3 (Naujatuuq Lake) and encompasses the informally named Dop Lake, in central Nunavut.  It is located approximately 80 km northwest of the Kiggavik uranium deposit.  The Naujatuuq River runs through the southeast corner of the study area.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 7 km from the southern shores of Lake Naujatuuq.
