Survey Description

During the summers of 2004 and 2005, stream sediments and waters were collected to evaluate the mineral potential of the proposed extension areas to Nahanni National Park Reserve, Northwest Territories.  The survey covered parts of NTS 95C, D, E, G, K, L and 105H, I, a much larger extension area than was surveyed in an earlier resource assessment (Open File 1686).  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 5344.  This Open File also includes data from the first resource assessment of the area (OF 1686) as well as data from previous National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) surveys that overlap with the new proposed expansion area (GSC Open Files 4949 and 4016).

The survey coverage complements other NGR stream sediment sampling surveys in the Mackenzie Mountains, which began in 2004 and are ongoing as of summer 2009.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 105H (Frances Lake), 105I (Little Nahanni River), 95C (La Biche River), D (Coal River), E (Flat River), F (Virginia Falls), G (Sibbeston Lake), K (Root River), L (Glacier Lake), Northwest Territories.  It covers the proposed park extension areas for Nahanni National Park Reserve.

  • Covers parts of NTS 105I (Little Nahanni River) and 95L (Glacier Lake) near the headwaters of the South Nahanni River.  It covers part of the proposed park extension areas for Nahanni National Park Reserve.
