Survey Description

In 1986, a helicopter-supported reconnaissance stream sediment survey was carried out in Ragged Ranges and Nahanni Karst-Tlogotsho Plateau, the proposed expansion areas to Nahanni National Park Reserve as part of a resource assessment.  Using techniques tested in 1985, stream silts and coarser sediments (for heavy minerals) were collected at 284 streams.  Major drainage basins in the study regions were sampled.  The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 1686.

Data from this survey are also included GSC Open File 5344, a resource assessment carried out in a larger area than was previously considered for expansion.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 105H (Frances Lake), 105I (Little Nahanni River), 95L (Glacier Lake) and 95E (Flat River), in the Ragged Ranges area of the Mackenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories.  It represents the western proposed extension area to Nahanni National Park Reserve.  It includes the park in its southeast corner.

  • Covers parts of NTS 95F (Virgina Falls), 95G (Sibbeston Lake), 95B (Fort Liard) and 95C (La Biche River), in the Nahanni Karst-Tlogotsho Plateau area, Northwest Territories.  It represents the eastern proposed extension area to Nahanni National Park Reserve.  The park runs east-west through the study area.
