Survey Description

In 1990, an orientation vegetation survey was carried out in the general area of the tailings pond of the Tanco Ta-Li-Cs deposit in the Bernic Lake area, Manitoba approximately 60 km east of Lac du Bonnet.  A total of 57 samples representing twigs, outer bark and trunk wood from black spruce, pine, birch, poplar and alder were collected.  The sampling was carried out in March when sap flow in vegetation was effectively static.  A summary of the survey and the limited data available at the time of writing can be found in Manitoba Energy and Mines Report of Activities 1990.

In 1991, the survey area was expanded and approximately 100 samples of twigs, bark and trunk wood were collected from jack pine, black spruce, alder and tamarack at 34 sites along three grid lines.  Unlike the orientation survey in 1990, this area is considered to be free of contamination from mine development. A summary of the work can be found in Manitoba Energy and Mines Report of Activities 1991.

In 1992, the sampling was completed with a program designed to evaluate the areal extent of geochemical haloes previously identified.  A total of 40 samples were collected from 18 sites and included outer bark, twigs and needles of black spruce and outer bark of jack pine.  A summary of the work can be found in Manitoba Energy and Mines Report of Activities 1992.
