Survey Description

In September 1985, a multi-disciplinary study was conducted in two areas, Barbara Lake as well as the region of Cowie and Hanes lakes.

Lake sediments and water were collected at 42 lakes near Barbara Lake and 22 lakes near Cowie and Hanes lakes.  Vertical profiles of pH, temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen were also taken.

Humus samples were collected along two cut lines, one in each area.

Remote sensing surveys were carried out to determine which lakes were acid.

A descripton of the work can be found in OGS MP126 (Summary of Field Work 1985).

The data and a detailed description of the humus survey are published on Ontario Geological Survey Map M80797.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 41N/01 (Batchewana) and 41N/08 (Grey Owl Lake) in the Barbara Lake area, Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 22 km east of Lake Superior.  It is bounded to the north by Montreal River.

  • Covers part of NTS 41O/04 (Welcome Lake) in the area of Cowie and Hanes lakes, Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 35 km north of Highway 566 and 54 km west of Highway 129.  It extends from Morrison Lake in the south to Hanes Lake in the north.
