Survey Description

In 1983 lake sediment and water samples were collected from 72 lakes in a 10 x 100 km strip north of Wanapitei Lake, Ontario in an area affected by acid rain from the Sudbury smelters.  A method developed for the description of the pH history of lakes, which is based on detailed studies of the abundance of diatoms in the top 25 cm of lake sediment, had previously only been used north and east of Lake Superior.

The method was tested in this new area where different limnological and geochemical conditions existed.  Some of the lakes chosen were known to be acid while others were known to have a neutral reaction thus providing a wide range in pH values for study.

The data and a description of the study can be found in Ontario Geological Survey Map M80756.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 41I/15 (Milnet), 41P/02 (Pilgrim Creek), 41P/07 (Smoothwater Lake) and 41P/10 (Gowganda) in the Sudbury area, northern Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 85 km northeast of Sudbury.  It extends south from Wanapitei Lake to just north of Highway 560.
