Survey Description

In 1981, five lake systems in the Algoma District, Ontario, were studied.  Each system included a headwater lake and 3 lakes at lower elevations in the catchment area.  Water samples and at least two 50 cm long sediment cores were collected.  Deep sediment cores, up to 7.1 m in length were collected from selected lakes.

In 1982, lake water and sediments were collected in the vicinity of Wawa, Ontario and at Michipicoten Island to verify and standardize the methodology that had proven feasible in the 1981 survey.  Some lakes were resampled and some new lakes were also sampled.  In total, 10 lakes were studied.

Limnological and palynological investigations were also carried out in both years.

The data are published in Ontario Geological Survey Open File Report OFR5483.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 41N/01 (Batchewana) and 41N/08 (Grey Owl Lake), in the Algoma District, northern Ontario. It is bounded to the north by Montreal River.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 32 km east of Lake Superior and 83 km north-northeast of the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

  • Covers parts of NTS 42C/01 (Manitowik) and 42C/02 (Hawk Junction) and small parts of 41N/15 (Michipicoten) , 41N/16 (Kinniwabi Lake) and 42C/07 (Medhurst Creek), in the Algoma District, northern Ontario.  It is located just east of Michipicoten Harbor, Lake Superior.  The town of Wawa is located in the southwest part of the study area.

  • Covers part of NTS 42C/15 (Gourlay Lake) in the Algoma District, northern Ontario.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 35 km north east of the town of White River and 11 km east of Dayohessarah Lake.  Highway 631 crosses the study area.
