Survey Description

In 1980, twenty lakes were studied in a 20 km x 100 km strip located west of Wawa, Ontario as part of a multi-disciplinary follow-up of regional pH patterns in lakes north of Lake Superior to study the problem of acid precipitation.

Lakes for the study were selected using a model based on published regional geochemical maps of lake water pH (Geological Survey of Canada Open Files 554 and 555) as well as those by the Ontario Geological Survey.

In addition to limnological and palynological studies, lake sediment cores were collected at each of the 20 lakes and the sediment was analysed for a suite of elements by ICP-ES and AAS.

The data and a detailed description of the study are published in Ontario Geological Survey Open File Report OFR5342 and Map M80713.
