Survey Description


Approximately 600 till samples were collected in the Fort Frances-Rainy River area, northwestern Ontario.  In 1986 the till samples were collected as part of the regular mapping routine.  In 1987 and 1988 backhoe trenching and sonic drilling programs were undertaken.  The data are published in Ontario Geological Survey Study S056 and Miscellaneous Release Data MRD008.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.063 mm fraction by AAS for 7 elements; by borate fusion-DCP for Cr and Ba; by FA/DCP for Au, Pt and Pd.  HMC (bulk <2 mm) by INAA for Au, As and Sb; HMC ground (<0.047 mm) by FA-DCP after aqua regia for 6 elements; by borate fusion-DCP for Cr and Ba.

Proportional symbol map showing the distribution of elements in fine and heavy mineral fraction of till.

Other Analyses:

Pebble counts; heavy mineral concentrate for gold grain determinations.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of 52D/9, 10, 15, 16 (Pinewood, Rainy River, Rainy River, Arbor Vitae) and 52C/11, 12, 13, 14 (Fort Frances, Emo, Northwest Bay, Mainville Lake) in the Fort Frances-Rainy River area, northwestern Ontario.  It is bounded to the west by the Canada-US border.
