Survey Description

In 1988, a total of 1214 sites were sampled in the Bute Inlet area, Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia.  Moss-mat sediment and stream water samples were collected from 281 sites on Vancouver Island.  Stream sediment and water samples were collected from 933 sites on the mainland.  Samples were collected at a density averaging 1 site per 11.4 km2.  Sixty-one percent of the samples were collected by truck and boat; the remaining 39% were collected by helicopter.

The data are published in Geological Survey of Canada Open File 2039 and British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Resources Regional Geochemical Survey RGS 22.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

Sampling Procedure

Moss-mat sediment samples weighing 1-2 kg were scraped from boulders and logs found within the active stream channel and placed in large kraft paper sample bags.  Stream sediment samples were collected from low energy sites and consisted of 2-4 kg of sand and finer inorganic material.  Water samples were collected in 250 mL Nalgene bottles.
