Survey Description

In 1989, samples of active stream sediments and overbank sediments were collected along the southern coast of Newfoundland in the Bay d’Espoir-Hermitage Bay-Fortune Bay area.

The two sample types were collected to evaluate the relative effectiveness of the two methods.  In total, 71 stream sediment and 63 overbank sediment samples were collected.

To evaluate optimal geochemical responses, the samples were split intovarious size fractions and were processed for heavy minerals.

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open File 1M/0319.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 1M/11 (Belleoram), 1M/12 (Gaultois), 1M/13 (st. Alban’s) and 1M/14 (Hungry Grove Pond) on the southern coast of Newfoundland, in the areas of Bay D’Espoir, Hermitage Bay and Fortune Bay.  The Bay d’Espoir Highway crosses the central part of the study area.
