Survey Description

During the summers of 1982 to 1984, a geochemical survey was carried out in seven areas of granitic terrane across the south coast and southern part of Newfoundland.

Area NTS Sample Type Collected
Granite Lake 12A/02 rock, stream sediment, soil*
Dollard Brook 11P/15 rock, stream sediment, soil*
Dollard Brook North 11P/15 rock, stream sediment
Bottom Brook 11P/16 rock, stream sediment, soil*
East Bay 11P/16, 1M/13 rock, stream sediment
François Granite 11P/10 rock, stream sediment
Ackley Granite 1M/10, 11, 14, 15 rock, stream sediment, soil*

* B- horizon soil samples were preferentially collected

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources Open File NFLD/3260.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers the northwest corner of NTS 12A/02 (Wolf Mountain), the Granite Lake area, southern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the east by Meelpaeg Reservoir and Granite Lake is found in the western part of the study area.

  • Covers a small part of the southeast corner of NTS 11P/15 (Dollard Brook) in southern Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 5 km east of Dollard Brook and 20 km north-northwest of the settlement of Locks Cove.

  • Covers a small part of NTS 11P/15 (Dollard Brook) in southern Newfoundland.  Dollard Brook crosses the southeast part of the study area and Dollard Pond is located approximately 7 km east of the northeast corner of the study area.

  • Covers most of the northwest corner of NTS 11P/16 (D’Espoir Brook), the Bottom Brook area in southern Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 43 km west-northwest of the town of Saint Alban’s and 35 km north of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Covers small parts of NTS 11P/16 (D’Espoir Brook) and 1M/13 (St. Alban’s) in the East Bay area, southern Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 13 km southwest of the town of Saint Alban’s and 8 km north of Baie D’Espoir.

  • Covers part of the northeast corner of NTS 11P/10 (Cape la Hune) in the area of the François Granite, southern Newfoundland.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 13 km northeast of the local service district of François.  It is bounded to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Covers parts of NTS 1M/10 (Terrenceville), 1M/11 (Belleoram), 1M/14 (Hungry Grove Pond) and 1M/15 (Gisborne Lake) in the area of the Ackley Granite, southern Newfoundland.  Long Harbour crosses the study area from north to south.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 12 km northwest of the town of English Harbour East.
