Survey Description

In 1991 and 1992 a helicopter-supported stream sediment and water survey was conducted in northern Labrador in areas where previous regional surveys had identified anaomalous patterns of gold, base metals and lithophile elements.

The following samples were colletcted:

Sample Type Number of Samples
stream sediment 610
heavy mineral concentrate (panned stream sediments) 115
stream water 378
rock 75

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open File OF LAB/1016 (only 9 trace elements are reported for the rock samples).

The data are also part of a compilation, NL Department of Natural Resources Open File LAB/1589.

Rock data for 45 trace elements are published in NL DNR Open File LAB/1621.

Geographic Extent

Minimum Latitude Maximum Latitude Minimum Longitude Maximum Longitude

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 14E/08 (Okak Bay), 14E/09 (Wheeler Mountain), 14E/13 (Lac Lomier), 14E/16 (Finger Hill), 14F/12 (Okak Harbour), 14F/13 (Mugford Harbour), 14L (Hebron), 14M/03 (Gulch Cape), 24I/01 (Lac Biraben) and 24I/16 (Mount Silene) in northern Labrador.  It is bounded to the east and southeast by the Labrador Sea.  Most of the study area is bounded to the west by the Quebec-Labrador border.

  • Covers NTS 14L/11 (Jens Haven Island) in northern Labrador.  It represents an hole in the sampling coverage for this survey.

  • Covers part of NTS 24P/16 (Eclipse Harbour) in northern Labrador.  It is bounded to the east by the Labrador Sea.
