Survey Description

In 2002, a high-density lake sediment and water survey was carried out in western Labrador, preferentially from lakes underlain by the Ossok Mountain intrusive suite.

Samples of organic lake sediment and lake water were collected from the centre of lakes at 509 sites using a float equipped helicopter.  The sampling density was one sample per 4.4 km2.

The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources Open File LAB/1397 and are also part of a geochemical lake survey compilation, Open File LAB/1465.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers most of the southern half of NTS 23H (Ossokmanuan Reservoir), all of 23A/13 (Rivière à la Fringue), 23A/14 (Lac Joseph), the west half of 23A/15 (untitled), and the east halves of 23G/01 (Wightman Lake) and 23G/08 (Molson Lake) in western Labrador.  The Labrador City – Churchill Falls part of the Trans-Labrador highway crosses the northwestern part of the study area.  The western boundary of the survey is approximately 60 km east of Labrador City/Wabush and the eastern boundary extends to within a few kilometres of the town of Churchill Falls.
