Survey Description


From May 30 to August 8, 1979, 2877 lake bottom sediment samples were collected from approximately 20,600 km2 in southwestern Newfoundland.  The sampling density averaged one sample per 7.1 km2.  The data were released as 6 individual Open Files:

These Open Files also include reanalyses of some samples collected in the area prior to 1979 and previously released (Open Files NFLD/0787, NFLD/0708).

Samples from parts of NTS 12A, B were analysed for gold and published in Open File NFLD/1801 with samples collected from those map sheets in other years.

Samples from the 1979 survey were reanalyzed by INAA and published with other reanalyses from the same map sheets in the following Open Files:

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 11O (Port aux Basques), 11P (Burgeo) and 12A (Red Indian Lake), 12B (Stephenville), 12H (Sandy Lake), southwestern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.  The town of Channel-Port aux Basques is located in the far southwest part of the study area.  Grand Lake is located in the northern part of the study area.

  • Covers parts of NTS 12B/9 (Harrys River), 12B/10 (Stephenville), 12B/15 (Shag Island), 12B/16 (Georges Lake), 12G/1 (Bay of Island), 12G/8 (Trout River), 12H/4 (Pasadena) and 12H/5 (Lomond), southwestern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the north by Gros Morne National Park and to the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  The city of Corner Brook is located in the east-central part of the study area.
