Survey Description

In 1974, organic-rich centre lake bottom sediments were collected over an area of 500 square miles on the east Burlington Peninsula (Nippers Harbour, Cape St. John, Baie Verte and Kings Point map sheets).  The data are published in Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy Open File NFLD/0785.  The data for As, Mo and F were released in Open File NFLD/0893.

During the same year, 391 organic-rich lake bottom sediments were collected over 700 square miles in the Codroy – St. George area, southwestern Newfoundland.  These data are published in Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy Open File NFLD/787.  Data for Sr and Ba were released in Open File NFLD/0876, uranium data in NFLD/906 and gold data in NFLD/1801.

Data from this area were also released as part of a compilation in Open File NFLD/0904.

Some of the samples were reanalyzed and published with data from samples collected at a later date in the following Open Files:

Samples were later reanalyzed by INAA and published with other samples collected in the same areas in the following Open Files:

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 12H/16 (Baie Verte) on the eastern Burlington Peninsula, northeast Newfoundland.  It is located approximately 10 km east of Highway 410 and 10 km west of the town of Burlington.

  • Covers part of NTS 12H/16 (Baie Verte) on the eastern Burlington Peninsula, northeast Newfoundland.  It is located approximately 15 km east of Highway 410 and 15 km southeast of the town of Baie Verte.

  • Covers parts of NTS 2E/13 (Lac Faure), 2E/14 (Anse de la Sauvagesse), 12H/9, (King’s Point) and 12H/16 (Baie Verte) on the eastern Baie Verte Peninsula (formerly called the Burlington Peninsula), Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the north by the Atlantic Ocean and to the southeast by Notre Dame Bay.

  • Covers parts of NTS 12B/1, 2, 3, 7, 8 (Dashwoods Pond, St. Fintan’s, Little Friars Cove, Flat Bay, Main Gut) and 11O/14, 15 (Codroy, Grandys Lake) in the Codroy-St. George area, southwestern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the west by St. George's Bay and the Trans-Canada Highway runs north-south through the study area.  The town of St. George's and the unincorporated area of St. Andrew's lie in the northern and southern parts of the study area respectively.
