Survey Description


In 1973, centre lake sediment samples were collected over an area covering approximately 2,500 square miles at an average density of about one sample per square mile.  Samples were collected on the eastern part of the Burlington Peninsula, on the Great Northern Peninsula and in southwest Newfoundland.  The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open File NFLD/708.  Selected samples were reanalyzed and published in Open File NFLD/880.  Data from this area were also released as part of a compilation in Open File NFLD/904.

Some of these data were reanalyzed and released with data from samples collected at a later date in the following Open Files:

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 12H/16 (Baie Verte) on the eastern Burlington Peninsula, northeast Newfoundland.  It is located approximately 10 km east of Highway 410 and 10 km west of the town of Burlington.

  • Covers part of NTS 12H/16 (Baie Verte) on the eastern Burlington Peninsula, northeast Newfoundland.  It is located approximately 15 km east of Highway 410 and 15 km southeast of the town of Baie Verte.

  • Covers parts of NTS 12A/13 (Corner Brook), 12B/6 (Cape St. George), 9 (Harrys River), 10 (Stephenville), 11 (Mainland), 16 (Georges Lake) and 12H/4 (Pasadena), 12H/5 (Lomond), southwestern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the south by St. George's Bay and to the southwest by the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  Highway 1 runs north-south through the centre part of the study area.

  • Covers part of NTS 12B/16 (Georges Lake) in southwestern Newfoundland.  Serpentine Lake covers a large portion of the study area which is located approximately 10 km northwest of the community of Beaver.

  • Covers parts of NTS 12H/13 (St. Pauls Inlet), 12I (Port Saunders), 12P (Blanc-Sablon) and 2M/4 (St. Julien's), 2M/5 (St. Anthony), 2M//12 (Raleigh) on the western part of the Great Northern Peninsula, northern Newfoundland.  Highway 430 runs north-south through most of the study area.  It is bounded to the west by the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

  • Covers part of NTS 12I/9 (Englee), south of the town of Englee on the eastern side of the Great Northern Peninsula, northern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the east by Labrador Sea and to the north by Canada Bay.

  • Covers part of NTS 12I/14 (St. John Island) off the west coast of Great Northern Peninsula, northern Newfoundland.  The study area covers St. John Island and two small islands to its east and west.
