Survey Description


A total of 1135 samples (including field duplicates) of BC- or C-soil horizon samples from tills were collected across the Bonavista Peninsula, eastern Newfoundland in 2000.  The sample density was 1 sample per 1 km2 for road accessible areas to 1 sample per 4 km2 for helicopter-supported sampling.  The data are published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Mines and Energy Open File NFLD/2734.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.063 mm fraction of till by INAA for 36 elements; by ICP-ES after HF-HCl-HClO4 digestion for 29 elements; by AAS after digestion in HNO3 for Ag.

Geochem Maps Available:

Proportional dot maps showing distribution of selected elements in till.

Other Analyses:

LOI.

Samples from this survey were reanalyzed for fluoride and the data are published in a compilation (Open File NFLD/3344) with samples collected from across the province between 1985 and 2017.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers all or parts of NTS 2C/3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12 (Old Perlican, Random Island, Sweet Bay, Trinity, Bonavista (10+11), Eastport), 2D/1 (Tug Pond) and 2D/8 (Port Blandford) on the Bonavista Peninsula, eastern Newfoundland.  It is bounded to the north by Bonavista Bay and to the south by Trinity Bay.
