Survey Description

904 till, 91 esker/outwash, 6 glacial lake, 3 A-horizon soil, 339 B-horizon soil, 195 C-horizon and 209 mudboil samples were collected in the Strange Lake area, western Labrador in 1984.  Sampling was conducted using a nominal 2 by 2 km grid over an approximately 1100 km2 area.  In areas close to mineralization, sample spacing was decreased to 500 m or less.

The data are published in Newfoundland Department of Mines and Energy Open File LAB/0843.

A subset of the samples was reanalyzed in ~2008 and published in Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources Open File LAB/1479.

Data Description:

Paper report and maps.

Quantities Analysed:

<0.063 mm fraction by AAS after HNO3 digestion and HCl leach for 11 elements; by XRF for 12 elements and ICP techniques; by ion specific electrode for F; by delayed neutron activation for U.

Geochem Maps Available:

Maps 91-63 to 91-83 (computer contour) show sample locations and the dispersal of selected elements in approximately 530 samples.

Lake sediment and water samples were collected from 107 sites using a float-equipped helicopter.  Stream sediment samples were collected from 133 sites giving a nominal sample density of 1 sample per 6 km2.  The study is described in Journal of Geochemical Exploration, v. 29 and the data are part of a two compilations:  Open File LAB/1465 (lakes) and Open File Lab/1589 (streams).

Samples from this survey were reanalyzed for fluoride and the data are published in a compilation (Open File LAB/1778) with samples collected from across Labrador between 1983 and 2004.
