GEM 2 South Rae Project, glacial synthesis activity, Northwest Territories, 2017-2018

Project Description

This activity is led by GSC in collaboration with Canada-Nunavut Geoscience Office and Northwest Territories Geological Survey.  The overall goal of this activity is to increase the effectiveness of mineral exploration methods that use compositional data from surface materials directly deposited by glacial ice (till, boulders) or derived from glacial sediments (esker, stream and lake sediments, etc.).

In addition to studying glacial landforms and history, till samples were collected in two sectors in Nunavut and Northwest Territories:

Project Funding

The Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals Program was first launched by the Government of Canada in 2008 as a 5 year program administered by Natural Resources Canada to provide geoscience knowledge in order to identify the potential for energy and mineral resources in Canada's North.  The program was renewed in 2013, and Phase 2 of GEM (GEM 2, 2013-2020) continues to advance geological knowledge in the North to support increased exploration of natural resources and to inform decisions on land use that balance conservation and responsible resource development.
