GEM 2 Chantrey-Thelon Project, Nunavut, 2014-2016
Project Description
The goal of the Thelon tectonic zone project is to advance geological understanding and attract mineral exploration to this underexplored, frontier region of Nunavut.
Till, stream sediment and stream water samples were collected as well as bedrock samples. The data are published as detailed below:
NTS | Year of Collection | Sample Type | GSC Open File |
76H, I | 2014 | till | 7910 |
76H. I | 2014 | stream sediments and water | 7887 |
76H, I, P | 2016 |
till stream sediments and water |
8302 |
76H, I, J | 2014, 2016 (initial sampling in 2012 under GEM 1) | bedrock | 8234 |

Project Funding
The Geo-Mapping for Energy and Minerals Program was first launched by the Government of Canada in 2008 as a 5 year program administered by Natural Resources Canada to provide geoscience knowledge in order to identify the potential for energy and mineral resources in Canada's North. The program was renewed in 2013, and Phase 2 of GEM (GEM 2, 2013-2020) continues to advance geological knowledge in the North to support increased exploration of natural resources and to inform decisions on land use that balance conservation and responsible resource development.
