Some analytical procedures cannot be logically classified into a hierarchical scheme.  The reasons for this include the following:

  • The procedure involves different techniques, dependent on the concentration of the analyte
  • The procedure involves a single instrument, which is capable of different kinds of measurements
  • The published data have been compiled from a variety of sources, and the techniques used cannot be identified
  • The published value is obtained by numerical calculation, using analytical values obtained by different methods – the calculation may be as simple as a summation of oxides
