Peat

Keyword Definition

An unconsolidated deposit of semicarbonized plant remains in a watersaturated environment, such as a bog or fen, and of persistently high moisture content (at least 75%).  It is an early stage or rank in the development of coal; carbon content is about 60% and oxygen content is about 30% (moisture-free).  Structures of the vegetal matter may or may not be seen depending on the degree of organic matter degradation.  When dried, peat burns freely.
