Survey Description


Between 2008 and 2010, a series of 589 soil and pollen samples were collected in 131 cities across Canada:

2008 ON, QC
2009 QC, NB, PEI, NS, NL
2010 ON, QC, SK, MB

 

At least three sites were chosen per “major” city:

  • at the border of the city limit in a low traffic zone (e.g. rest area)
  • within the city limit in a medium traffic zone (e.g. city park)
  • within the city limit in a high traffic zone (e.g. school yard, playground)

A summary of the work was presented at The 3 rd International Conference on Criminal and Environmental Soil Forensics in November 2010 at Long Beach, California.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 1N/10 (St. John's), the city of St. John's, on the Avalon Peninsula, Island of Newfoundland.  The Trans-Canada Highway runs SW-NE through the study area.  The eastern part of Windsor Lake lies in the northwest part of the study area.
