Survey Description


Between July 31 st and August 7 th, 2004, 96 sediment samples were collected from the Bury Cove, Stewart Lake and Curtis River Properties in the district of Keewatin and southern Melville Peninsula in central Nunavut Territory.  The majority of the samples were glacial till, however other materials such as beach sand, glaciofluvial/esker and marine sediments were collected.  The Bury Cove, Stewart Lake and Curtis River Properties are located 115 km southwest, 120 km west and 125 km northwest (respectively) from the community of Repulse Bay.  The sampled areas cover parts of NTS map sheets 46E/10-12, 16, 46M/5, 12, 56I/7, 9, 10, 15, 16 and 56P/2, and 8.  The samples were collected by BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc.  The data can be found in Nunavut Assessment Report 084809.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS map sheets 46E/10 (Umiijarvik Point), /11 (untitled), /12 (untitled) and /16 (Bury Cove) in the northeastern portion of the District of Keewatin in central Nunavut Territory.  The centre of the study area is located approximately 28 km north of the north shore of Wager Bay.

  • Covers a small part of NTS map sheet 46E/16 (Bury Cove) in the northeastern portion of the district of Keewatin in central Nunavut Territory.  The centre of the study area is located about 4 km northwest of Roes Welcome Sound and 61 km south of the hamlet of Repulse Bay.

  • Covers parts of NTS map sheets 46M/5 (Cape Lady Pelly), 12 (Swanston Point), and 56P/8 (untitled) and 9 (Cape Weynton) in the northeastern portion of the district of Keewatin in central Nunavut Territory.  It is bounded to the northeast by Committee Bay and the centre of the study area is located approximately 120 km northwest of the hamlet of Repulse Bay.

  • Covers parts of NTS map sheets 56I/7, 9, 10, 15, and 16 (all untitled) and 56P/2 (untitled) in the northeastern portion of the district of Keewatin in central Nunavut Territory.  The centre of the study area is located about 112 km west-northwest of the hamlet of Repulse Bay.
