Survey Description

Between 1992 and 1994, till and humus samples were collected in the NATMAP Shield Margin area in Saskatchewan and Manitoba at a sample spacing of 2-10 km.

The dark, organic component of uppermost soil horizon was sampled for humus.

At most till sites 3 sub-samples were taken: a 10 kg bulk sample for heavy minerals, a 3 kg sample for clast composition and carbonate content and a 3 kg sample for geochemistry, texture, colour and archiving.

The following samples were collected:

Year Humus Till Diamicton
1992 38 35 7
1993 37 41 2
1994 53 51 5

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 63L (Amisk Lake) and 63M (Pelican Narrows) in east central Saskatchewan.  Highway 106 runs east-west through the southern part of the study area.  Pelican Lake and Mirond Lake are found in the northern part of the study area.  The centre of the study area is approximately 55 km west of the Saskatchewan-Manitoba border.

  • Covers parts of NTS 63L (Amisk Lake) and 63K (Cormorant Lake) in east central Saskatchewan and just into west-central Manitoba.  Suggi and Namew lakes are located within the study area.  The town of Flin Flon Manitoba is located 66 km north east of the centre of the study area.

  • Covers a very small part of NTS 63K (Cormorant Lake; 1 site) in west central Manitoba. It is located approximately 42 km east of Highway 10 and 20 km south of Highway 39 and 14 km northeast of the north shore of Cormorant Lake.
