Survey Description

Peat and associated materials were sampled over a portion of the NEA-IAEA Test Area in the Athabasca Basin – Wollaston Lake area, northern Saskatchewan.  In June 1980, detailed sampling was carried out over uranium deposits at McClean Lake and McMahon Lake (Midwest deposit).  A total of 917 peat, surface organic materials (humus, Labrador tea and sphagnum moss) and inorganic clastic sediments (alluvium, colluvium, fluvial sand, till) were collected.  In addition, 353 interstitial waters squeezed from the peats were obtained.  For sample sites outside of bogs, either organic litter and /or sphagnum moss directly over boulders and/or glacial drift was collected.  In bogs, a pit was dug to the permafrost table (0.2-0.4 m) below which a continuous core was recovered using a frozen ground coring kit.  The interstitial waters of selected peat cores were squeezed out and filtered (0.45 µm).  The data are published in GSC Open File 854 and a summary of the work can be found in Geological Survey of Canada Paper 82-11.

Data Description:

Paper report with data lists.

Quantities Analysed:

0.177 mm fraction of peat, organic materials and inorganic clastic sediments analysed for Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Mo, V by AAS after HNO3-HCl digestion. As was determined by colourimetric methods. U was determined at Atomic Energy of Canada using a method of neutron activation with delayed neutron counting.  U content of interstitial peat waters was determined by fluorometric method.  Interstitial waters also analysed for the following anions: F, Cl, PO4, NO3 and SO4 using the Dionex system.

Geochem Maps Available:

None.

Other Analyses:

pH, conductivity, F-content (by selective-ion electrode), alkalinity and organic carbon (using the Barnstead Organic Carbon Analyzer) of the interstitial waters was measured.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers part of NTS 74I/8 (Henday Lake) in the McMahon Lakes area, near the Midwest uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan.  It covers part of the NEA/IAEA Test Area.

  • Covers part of NTS 64L/5 (Cunning Bay) in the McClean Lake area, northern Saskatchewan and is part of the NEA/IAEA Test Area.
