Survey Description

Helicopter-supported sample collection was carried out during the summer of 1997 on northern Bathurst Island and Vanier Island.  Stream sediment and water samples were collected at 57 sites.  Material targeted for sampling consisted of silt gathered at a point on a primary or secondary stream just below a ‘break’, a point where the grade decreases, the flow of water slows, and sediments are deposited.  Sediments were gathered wherever possible from the active main channel, usually from the lee side of rocks or other channel obstructions.  Obvious bank sediments were avoided.  Water samples (250 mL) were collected in wide-mouth polyethylene bottles.  The data are published in MERA report, GSC Open File 3714 (Part D).  This report also includes data from the 1995 and 1996 surveys previously published in Open Files 3292 and 3566 respectively.

This survey was carried out using National Geochemical Reconnaissance (NGR) protocols.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers parts of NTS 79A (Domett Point) and 69B (Helena Island) on Vanier Island, just west of Bathurst Island.

  • Covers part of NTS 69B (Helena Island) on the western peninsula of northern Bathurst Island.  It is bounded to the west by Erskine Inlet and to the east by May Inlet.

  • Covers part of NTS 69B (Helena Island) on the northern tip of Bathurst Island.  It is bounded to the north by Sir William Parker Strait.

  • Covers part of NTS 69B (Helena Island) near Gambier Point on northern Bathurst Island.  It is bounded to the north by Purcell Bay and to the west by May Inlet.

  • Covers parts of NTS 69A (Penny Strait) and 68H (McDougall Sound) along the east coast of northern Bathurst Island.  It is bounded to the south by Polar Bear Pass and to the east by Penny Strait and Queens Channel.
