Survey Description


During the winter of 1983-1984, a sampling survey was conducted in the Thetford-Mines area, Quebec.  A total of 1850 soil samples were collected at an average density of 1 sample per 2.4 km2.  The sampling covers 4000 km2.  Samples were taken from organic horizons (L, F and H) and also from enriched organic mineral horizon (Ah).

For the tills, a total of 1051 samples were collected at an average density of 1 sample per 4.2 km2. The sampling covers 3500 km2.  Using a mechanical auger, samples were taken at average depths of 2-3.5 m.

Samples were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Mo, Ag, Au, Cr, As, Hg, U and loss on ignition.

This document contains only raw data.  Geochemical maps and results will be published subsequently.  The data are published in Open File DV 84-16, Department of Energy and Resources, 1984.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers NTS 21L/3 (Thetford Mines), /4 (Victoriaville), 21E/13 (Warwick), /14 (Disraeli).  The Thetford Mines area is situated in the Estrie, Chaudières-Appalaches and Centre-du-Québec regions.  It includes Thetford Mines, Asbestos and Plessisville.  It is bounded by latitudes 45°45' and 46°15' and longitudes 71° and 72°.
