Survey Description


Lithogeochemical surveys were carried out in the Abitibi Greenstone belt (includes the Timmins, Lake Abitibi, Kirkland Lake, Swayze and Matachewan areas) in various years as part of geological compilation of the area.  This compilation was released in 2004 as Ontario Geological Survey Miscellaneous Release -Data 143.

The geographic extent of the survey is defined by the following polygons:

  • Covers most of NTS 42A, parts of 41P, 42B, 42H, 31M, and 32D, part of the Abitibi Greenstone belt in northern Ontario.  A very small part of the study area lies in NTS32D/11, which is in the province of Quebec.  It is bordered to the east by the Ontario-Quebec border.

  • Covers part of NTS 31M/5 (Cobalt) in northern Ontario.  The town of Cobalt is located approximately 7 km south of the centre of the study area.

  • Covers part of NTS 42A/4 (Kenogaming Lake) and 42B/1 (Foleyet) in northern Ontario, part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt.  Horwood Lake and Groundhog Lake are located in the southwest portion of the study area.

  • Covers parts of NTS 41O/9 (Opeepeesway Lake), 41O/10 (Sultan), 41O/15 (Rollo Lake) and 41O/16 (Rush Lake) in northern Ontario, part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt.  Its centre is located approximately 185 km east of Lake Superior.
